Ijen plateau or known as Kawah Ijen is very advised to mountain fans and hikers. The Plateau was at one time a big active crater, 134 sq km in area. Ijen is silent, but the active volcano and the landscape are dominated by the volcanic cones of Ijen and Merapi on the northeastern border of the Plateau, and Raung on the southwest corner. The port is a source of sulfur and collectors work here, making the trek up to the crater and down into the lake each day.
You may take a walk for around 1-1.5 hour into the crater rim.
The Ijen Plateau could be attained throughout Bondowoso from either the north or the southern coast. It’s closer to Ijen Carter Banyuwangi, but the road is quite steep and badly deteriorated. A 4 WD is vital, although difficult to employ in Banyuwangi and prohibitively costly. Many people walk the last 8 km along the road to Pos Paltuding out of Bondowoso.
